Located on the Southwestern part of Europe on the border between France and Spain, Andorra's geography mainly consists of rugged mountains in the Pyrenees and a few valleys in between. Despite its rugged terrain and its small size, Andorra still holds over 60 mountains which reach an altitude of over 2900 metres or 9000 feet.   

Located between France and Spain, Andorra is one of the smallest states in Europe. Since its existence in 1278, it has been ruled by France as well as Spain. Since the 1990s, Andorra became officially known as the Principality of Andorra. It is linguistically more connected to Spain than it is to France because Catalan is the official language of Andorra which makes Andorra the only state which has Catalan as its official language. Andorra is mainly known for its mountainous terrain, its tourism, which consists largely of its ski resorts, as well as its low taxes on commodities which makes it an attractive shopping destination   

Andorra is ranked as the 178th largest state in the world. It is slightly smaller than St. Lucia and slightly larger than Palau with a surface area of 470 square kilometers or 181 square miles.

Because of its small size and its mountainous terrain, it is hard to estimate its water reserves due to seasonal changes. However, Andorra is known to have some small rivers, with the Valira being the largest, as well as creeks which mainly fill up during spring.

The capital of Andorra, Andorra la Vella has a population of 23 thousand inhabitants. Its closest capital is Madrid, Spain, which is 455 kilometres or 283 miles from its capital.  The capital that is the furthest removed from Andorra is Wellington New Zealand with 19,473 kilometres or 12,100 miles.   

With tourism, finance and retail, Andorra's economy has developed from a medium to a high-income state. Aside from tourism, its banking sector also plays a large role in its GDP due to its bank secrecy laws. However, due to its accession to the eurozone, its banking secrecy has been limited. Andorra is also largely dependent on agricultural imports because only 2% of its total land mass is arable. Its largest import partner is Spain of which it imports 64% of its total import with France being second with 13%. Other large import partners are Germany Italy and China. The export products of Andorra mainly consist of tobacco, integrated circuits and furniture which it exports for more than 60% to Spain and for 18% to France.

Andorra is ranked as the 191st most economically connected state. It is a member of only three international economic organisations. These are: 

  • International Monetary Fund 

  • World Customs Organization 

  • World Trade Organization 

Andorra's GDP is ranked 165th globally with a GDP of just over $3 billion dollars.   

Andorra is also ranked 23rd with an average earning off 40.400 dollars per capita.

The Andorran population is closely connected to the Spanish and French populations, which represent roughly 50 percent of the total population. Both languages are spoken but is has Catalan as its official language. It is the 190th most populous state with a total population of 77.000 people.

It has a population density of 163 people per square kilometers, or 423 people per square mile, which ranks it as the 56th highest population density in the world.

Roughly 13 percent of the population, or around 10.000 people, have migrated to other states. This ranks Andorra as the 185th state with the highest number of emigrants and represent roughly 0.004 percent of total global migration. These are mainly people that remigrated to Spain or France.

Around 40.000 people, or 53 percent of the population, have migrated to Andorra. This ranks Andorra as the 147th state with the highest number of emigrants and represents 0.02 percent of total global migration.  

Literacy

It is the third most literate state in the world with a literacy rate of 99.6 percent of the population. Education is free and compulsory between the ages of 6 and 16 with secondary education being provided for free as well.  

Health

Andorra provides public health care which is fully funded by the state. It is known to have only a single hospital. However, this hospital is ranked among the best in the world. The average life expectancy is 83 years, which is the second highest in the world. Women reach an average age of 85.4 years while men reach an average of 80.8 years.

Religion

The government of Andorra provides freedom of religion but has had a favorable attitude toward Catholicism. 

Christianity is followed by 95.5 percent of the population, which ranks Andorra as the 18th most Christian state in the world and can be traced back to the seventh century.

Islam is followed by 1.4 percent of the population which ranks it as the 119th most Islamic state in the world. Most Muslims arrived in Andorra through Spain and mainly originated from northern Africa. 

There are no official Buddhist organizations in Andorra. It is estimated that 0.07 percent of the population adheres to Buddhism.
