Known for its diverse marine life, it's luxurious resorts as well as its rare bird species, the Seychelles, named after a French finance minister during the 18th century, has had a relatively stable history. Before being explored, the island was uninhabited. Its first discovery is disputed between Arab merchants in the ninth century or Portuguese explorers during the 16th century. It is only until the second half of the 18th century when the French relocated African slaves to the Seychelles. At the start of the 19th century, the Seychelles came under British jurisdiction until achieving independence in 1976. Since then, it has been ruled by a single political party until the end of the 20th century and has slowly transformed into a multiparty system and has seen peaceful transitions of power since the start of the 21st century. .
Located off the coast of eastern Africa, the Seychelles is an island state with more than 100 islands. The largest islands are densely forested and almost fully consists of low mountains. The islands are scattered throughout the Indian Ocean and are sometimes more than thousand kilometers apart.
It is the 180th largest state with a total surface area of 454 square kilometers or 176 square miles. This makes Seychelles slightly smaller than Barbados and slightly larger than Palau.
It does not have permanent bodies of water within its territory.

The capital of the Seychelles, Victoria, is home to approximately 27,000 people. The closest capital is Mogadishu, Somalia, with a distance of 1.350 kilometers or 839 miles. The capital that is the furthest removed is Mexico City, Mexico, with a distance of 16.833 kilometers or 10.459 miles.
Since its independence, the Seychelles has created a mixed economy which is highly dependent on its fishing industry as well as its tourism sector. This has made the economy of the Seychelles highly dependent on global demand which fell during the financial crisis of 2008 of which it has recovered. Most of its exported goods are fish, cinnamon and petroleum which are mainly exported to the United Arab Emirates and the United States which combined represent 50 percent of all exports. Most of its imports comes from the United Arab Emirates which is solely responsible for more than 20 percent of all imports.

The Seychelles has a total population of just under 100,000 people which makes it the 184th highest in the world. Despite being a French and a British colony, Seychellois is its official language. Its current population is an ethnic mix between people from Europe, Africa and South Asia.
It has the 48th highest population density in the world with 215 people per square kilometer or 555 people per square mile.
Around 30 percent of its population, or just under 30,000 people have migrated to other states. This makes the Seychelles the 180th state with the highest number of emigrants and represents 0.012 percent of total global emigration. Education is free and compulsory between the ages of four and 17. Its current literacy rate is 95.1 percent which makes it the 90th most literate state in the world. This number is likely to increase as education has only been compulsory since its independence which has left a high illiteracy rate among its elder population.
The health care system in the Seychelles is universal and among the best in Africa. Aside from effectively countering communicable diseases, its non-communicable diseases have been on the rise since the start of the 21st century. This is largely due to alcohol abuse and inactivity which has put an increasing burden on its healthcare system. The average life expectancy is 73.76 years which is the 79th highest in the world. Women have an average life expectancy of 77.7 years, while men have an average life expectancy of 70.3 years.
The government of the Seychelles provides freedom of religion towards all religions.
It is the 57th most Christian state in the world with a total of 78.5 percent of its population. Because of its colonial history, Roman Catholicism and the Anglican church have been the largest denominations.

There are no official Buddhist organizations in the Seychelles.
Hinduism is represented by 2.1 percent of the population and is the second largest religion in the Seychelles. Hinduism has been introduced to the Seychelles through Indian migrants during the British colonial era.
Islam is represented by 1.1 percent of the population which makes it the 125th most Islamic state in the world and has been introduced in the 16th century through Arab merchants. In the 19th century, some Arabs settled in the Seychelles and have built several mosques throughout its islands.
Judaism is represented by 0.03 percent of the population and mainly consists of Israeli tourists that have settled in the Seychelles.
Other religions are represented by 0.45 percent of the population and are adherents to the Baha'i faith as well as indigenous African beliefs in witchcraft and sorcery.
Irreligion is represented by 4.42 percent of the population.
