Since its foundation, Afghanistan has fought ten wars with other states. The most recent international wars were with the Soviet Union (1979-1989) and with the United States (2001-present). Other notable wars were the First Anglo-Afghan War (1839-1842), Anglo-Afghan War (1878-1880), Afghanistan–Pakistan border clash 1949-present and the Civil war in Afghanistan 1996-2001.

Known for its Dalmatians as well as its hundreds of islands, Croatia has been in existence since the seventh century. Several conflicts have ensued since the settlement of the Croat people in the region. After repelling invasions from the Byzantine Empire, the territory was conquered in 1091 when Hungary invaded. After the Hungarians were defeated by the Ottomans in 1526, it became incorporated in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. After the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1918, together with other Balkan states, it became Yugoslavia. After pro-communism Yugoslavia which was ruled by Joseph Tito. The death of Joseph Tito revived its nationalism and following the start of the collapse of the Soviet Union elections were held which established present-day Croatia. .
Located in southeastern Europe, the geography of Croatia is characterized by low-lying mountains that border the Balkan and a flat plane and that borders Hungary. Compared to its surrounding states, it has the longest coastline that borders the Adriatic Sea. To the north it borders hungry, to the east it borders Serbia, to the south east it borders Bosnia and Herzegovina and to the northwest it borders Slovenia.
Its total landmass is 56,877 square kilometers or 21,960 square miles which makes it the 124th largest state in the world. It is slightly smaller than Togo and slightly larger than Bosnia and Herzegovina.
It has around 623 square kilometers or 241 square miles of water making it the 71st state with the largest body of water.

The main water source comes from rivers with the Danube River being its largest. The majority of its drinking water is derived from groundwater and the remaining drinking water is extracted with small desalination treatment plants.

The climate of Croatia is characterized by its hot and dry summers and mild and rainy winters near the Adriatic coast and harsh winters inland. The average temperature is 11.7 degrees Celsius or 53.1 degrees Fahrenheit.
During its summer period from May to August, the average temperature is 16.5 degrees Celsius or 61.7 degrees Fahrenheit.
During the winter, from November until January, temperatures drop down to 8.6 degrees Celsius or 47.5 degrees Fahrenheit.
The average rainfall is 104 centimetres or 41 inches per year. The majority of its rainfall is located near the Adriatic coast.
The capital of Croatia, Zagreb, is home to 700,000 people. The capital that is closest located to Zagreb is Ljubljana Slovenia with a distance of 127 kilometers or 79 miles. The capital that is furthest removed from Zagreb is Wellington New Zealand with a distance of 18,250 kilometers or 11,340 miles.
Shortly after its independence, Croatia was involved in the Yugoslav war which had a severe impact on its economy. At the turn of the century, the economy started to grow and was put to a halt due to the financial crisis of 2008. After spending cuts by the Croatian government, the economy started to grow again after 2012 and after accession to the European Union in 2013, it became the strongest economy in southeastern Europe. The goods that are mainly exported are machinery, medical equipment petroleum and chemicals. These are mainly exported to Germany Italy and Slovenia. Most of its imports come from Germany and Italy which together make up just under 30 percent of total imports.

Its GDP per square kilometer is just over US$1 million and it's GDP per square mile is US$2.7 million making it the 65th state with the highest amount of GDP per surface area.

With a total population size of 4.2 million people, Croatia is the 129th most populous state in the world. The official language in Croatia is Croatian which is spoken by more than 95 percent of the population. Other languages are Hungarian and Serbian which are mainly spoken by ethnic minorities within Croatia.
It has the 109th highest population density with 73 people per square kilometer or 188 people per square mile.
Around 700,000 people, or 17.2 percent of the population has emigrated from Croatia. This is mainly as a result of the Yugoslav wars. Nearly half of the Croats have migrated to Germany with also notable numbers going to the United States, Italy, Slovenia and Austria.
Immigration to Croatia is largely represented by people from Bosnia and Herzegovina. The reasons for migration to Croatia are the historical instability in the region as well as economic prospects that Croatia has to offer in regards to Bosnia and Herzegovina. Around 500,000 people, of which nearly 400,000 people being Bosniaks, have migrated to Croatia which represents a share of 12.5 percent.
Primary school is compulsory and is provided for free in Croatia. Before Croatian independence, the primary school was also mandatory in the Yugoslav Republic which has led to the 32nd highest literacy rate in the world standing at 98.8 percent.
Even though Croatia has a developed healthcare system, it faces several challenges. One of these is the uneven distribution of healthcare throughout Croatia. As a result of this, access to healthcare in rural areas has been limited. Another challenge is the overall improvement of healthcare in order to make it financially sustainable while improving its quality. The average life expectancy in Croatia is 79 years with men reaching 76 years and women reaching 82 years.
The Croatian government recognizes the freedom of religion towards all religions while at the same time not adopting an official state religion.
As the 10th most Christian state in the world, Christianity is followed by 92.9 percent of the Croat population. The majority of Croats adhere to the Catholic faith. When Croatia was incorporated in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, it was introduced by Protestantism, but this remained a minority denomination.

Islam is the second largest religion in Croatia and is followed by 1.4 percent of the population making it the 117th most Islamic state in the world. Islam was first introduced in Croatia during the Ottoman conquest where parts of Croatia were converted to Islam. However, the Ottoman Empire did not succeed in conquering the full territory of Croatia.
Buddhism is followed by 0.13 percent of the population and was established in the 1980s with the majority adhering to the Nying branch of Buddhism.
Around 0.04 percent of the population adheres to Hinduism.
Around 0.05 percent population adheres to Judaism. This percentage was higher than before the second world war. During the second world war, Nazi Germany had established the Nazi friendly Croat state that aided in the persecution of the Jews throughout the region. This has led to a decline of Jews as well as a large migration of the Jews after the second world war.
It is estimated that around 0.07 percent of the population adheres to another religion.
Around 5.4 percent of the population is considered to be atheist. This is mainly inherited by its communist past where State atheism was also expected by its citizens.
