Chad, officially known as the Republic of Chad derived its name from the word Tsade, which means Lake. Being one of the larger landlocked states in Africa, its history started with the expansion of Islam into the Maghreb from the eighth century until the 20th century. During this period, smaller kingdoms within its territory fought for control of the region. At the start of the 20th century, the French Empire had overthrown these kingdoms and made it a colony of France. After the second world war, it gained territorial control and in 1960 became fully independent from France. After independence, several coups, the ceding of territory to Libya as well as internal skirmishes followed. .
The geography of Chad is characterized by being semi-arid. To the southwest there is lake Chad which also borders Cameroon, Niger and Nigeria and is replenished by the rivers Logone and Chari. The northern half of Chad consist of an arid desert that has some mountain ranges which it shares with Libya to the north and Sudan to the east.
In terms of surface area, Chad is the 20th largest state in the world making it slightly larger than Niger and slightly smaller than Peru. It has a total surface area of 1.3 million square kilometers or just under 500,000 square miles.
It has a total water surface area of around 25,000 square kilometers or 9600 square miles making it the 22nd state with the largest body of water.

The majority of its water comes from the rivers that flow along the border with Cameroon as well as the Central African Republic. Most of the water that Chad receives is polluted.

The capital that is furthest removed from N’djamena is Apia Samoa with a distance of 19,260 kilometers or just under 12,000 miles.
The economy of Chad is mainly based in agricultural products. However, since the economy of Chad has been opening up to foreign investment, its oil sector as well as its gold mining operations has created favourable economic growth. However, government corruption as well as its tumultuous history and an underdeveloped infrastructure hinder further foreign investment as well as economic growth. At present, France as well as the United States are one of its larger importers of oil but in recent years China has made large investments as well. The largest import partner of Chad is France which represents more than 40 percent of its total imports.

With a population of 15.9 million people, there are more than 100 languages spoken within Chad, but it has recognized French and Arab as its official languages. Another large language within Chad is Sara which is spoken in the southern part of Chad.
The population density is the 179th highest in the world with a population density of 12 people per square kilometer or 32 people per square mile.
Due to its central location in Africa, Chad has been a central transit hub for migration from Africa to Europe. It has also seen large numbers of migrants as a result of its civil war in the 1980s which caused a large number of citizens to flee to neighbouring Nigeria. It is estimated that around 1.9 percent, or around 300,000 people are currently living abroad.
Around 3.2 percent of the population consists of immigrants that immigrated to Chad due to economic reasons. It is estimated that around 500,000 people of foreign origin reside within Chad.
Due to the large disbursements of people throughout Chad, the educational system of Chad does not reach all citizens. Therefore, many children are not able to attend school which has led to one of the lowest literacy rates in the world which is currently stand at 33.9 percent.
There are several health risks that are prevalent within Chad. One of the largest is HIV, which is estimated to be prevalent in five percent of the population. Other diseases that are health risks are malaria and diseases that are related to food consumption. This is largely due to a lack of nutrition, but also as a result of over consumption of alcohol and tobacco. The average life expectancy is 55.2 years making it the 185th highest in the world. Life expectancy for women is around 56.7 years and four men around 53.7 years.
Located on the border between the Arab world of northern Africa and the Christian world of central and southern Africa, Chad is dominated by both religions.
Christianity, with mostly the Roman Catholic denomination, arrived with the arrival of the French. The spread of Protestant missionaries started at the beginning of the 20th century and has ended just before the start of the civil war because these missionaries were accused of being complicit with either faction. At present, it is estimated that around 39.7 percent of Chadians adhere to the Christian faith.

The arrival of Islam in Chad came in the form of Islamic traders that settled around Lake Chad around the ninth century. A larger number of Islamic migrants started to arrive at the end of the 14th century and also started to settle in the northern parts of Chad. Almost half of the Chadian Muslims adhere to the Sunni branch of Islam with the remaining Muslims adhering to Shia or non-denominational Islam.

Other religions mainly stem from indigenous people that live in the southern, forested parts of Chad and represents around 1.14 percent of the total population.
